Mrs Kell Weekly Update

Dear Parents/ Carers,

It has been a windy end to this week! Pupils and staff have tried to ‘batten down the hatches’ today and been storing outdoor resources indoors where necessary.

Heidi from the Citizens Advice was thrilled this week as all of her available slots were booked. If you have thought about accessing the support and not yet dropped her an email/ called to make an appointment for next week, she would love to welcome you. These meetings are strictly confidential.

We will be writing to you to formally launch our refill shop in February, so keep an eye out for that. The Year 6 JLT are working on plans for the event. I have included some photographs from this week’s farm shop delivery. We have over 80 families a week using the farm shop. This week, we also started a book lending library. There is always something new – so please do come and check it out if you haven’t already. Unexpectedly, Amazon Multibank donated 500 mini cans of Lynx deodorant to the school last week, so every boy in Year 4,5 and 6 in the coming days will come home with some samples to support their personal hygiene development. The remaining cans are also available in the farm shop. We are investigating a card reader at this time in response to feedback from you. We hope to implement this shortly.

S2 have had a brilliant week. I especially love walking in on their yoga sessions. I tried to join in one day, but some of the moves were more challenging than others! Have a look how they got on below.

A huge thank you to the Year 5 staff team for supporting our pupils on their residential to Boggle Hole this week. This residential was fully funded and we are in talks with the organisation as to whether they continue to partially fund future residentials as the offer of a fully funded visit was for this academic year only. We will let you know the outcome as we would be thrilled if we could expand our residential offer beyond Year 6. Our Year 5 pupils were exemplary; the staff were full of compliments for all of the children, their cooperation, their respect, their care of each other. Staff told me that they were tired but that they had been an exceptional year group to take away. I am sure pupils are happy to be home and will sleep over the weekend to catch up! Any photos that were taken will be shared by Dojo.

Thank you to the selected Year 1 and 2 parents that attended an additional phonics workshop this morning, working together we will ensure that your children make the maximum progress. And thank you to our cook, Emma for coming in early to make bacon sandwiches for parents. There will be information about future workshops for different groups/ year groups over the next term and a half.

Next week, we welcome Drakes the bookshop into school for an assembly. We have partnered with the bookshop and asked that they curate a selection of books for every age in school that reflect one of our school values. Our first assembly is themed around the value of ‘Aspiration.’

In the first week of Spring Term, we relaunched our choir. I am thrilled to say that over 15 pupils have joined our existing choir members! We are currently ordering their Tees Valley Education shirts, which they will wear with pride at Easter, in their first off site performance. We know that singing makes our brain release chemicals called endorphins that make us feel positive. Singing can also change levels of some hormones in our bodies and this reduces feelings of anxiety – there are just so many benefits of joining a school choir.

Wishing you a safe weekend,

Mrs Kell

Class Dojo

Do you know the school now uses Class Dojo? This is a great service for parents/carers to see what the children get up to daily at school.

It also shows parents/carers what the children have been getting points for, including being on time, working hard during class and good manners to teachers and their friends.

The children are also scored for meeting the Values we hold closely at Dormanstown Primary of Inspiration, Aspiration, Collaboration and Celebration

Also just a reminder that the Academy still uses School Gateway for any messages to be sent to the school. This includes Attendance, medical appointments and general questions.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

Missed Learning

23.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 218 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is Fantastic!!

A huge WELL DONE to you all.

Can you get 100% next week?

Missed Appointments

We strive to accommodate parents/carers with appointment times within the academy. Unfortunately we have noticed that many appointments have been missed, occasionally this may be due to unforeseen circumstances. If you have to cancel and/or re-arrange your appointment, please ensure you contact the academy as soon as possible. Failing to turn up for an appointment and not contacting the academy to cancel it has an adverse effect on other parents/carers appointment times. This can also take valuable staff time that could have been utilised by other parents.

Heading into the last week of Happier January, it seems a perfect time to reflect on what actions you’ve taken and what action you still can take before February.

Citizens Advice

Citizens Advice comes to Dormanstown Primary Academy

Every Tuesday

Book your appointments NOW

You can pop in to the school for a face to face appointment or contact the school on (do we have a number to contact?) or email Heidi on enquiries@citizensadvicedrc.org.uk to arrange a telephone call and Heidi will contact you.

Through working in partnership with the Woodsmith Foundation, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting Citizens Advice on school site every Tuesday during term time this academic year.

We all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating. Citizens Advice believe that no one should have to face these problems without good quality, independent advice. That’s why they’re here: to give our families the knowledge and the confidence they need to find their way forward. Citizens Advice recognise that this time of year can be tough for many people, so we hope that our families take advantage of this fantastic resource on our doorstep.

Citizens Advice are able to support families with benefits, work, debt and money challenges – from understanding your welfare rights, to debt management, to completing DLA applications.

All appointments are private and confidential, and the entrance to the meeting room will be through our separate ‘Community Hub’ entrance. To access this support, please contact Mrs Sherwood on: Sharon.Sherwood@tved.org.uk or if you would prefer to contact Helen Kennedy, Dormanstown’s Community Connector, you can do so on Helen.Kennedy@woodsmithfoundation.org.uk.  Please get in touch with any questions. Appointments will be booked on a first come, first served basis. Appointments may be booked well in advance or up until the day before.
