At Dormanstown Primary Academy, our History curriculum enables pupils to gain cumulatively built knowledge and deepen an understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world and its impact on modern society. It will support pupil’s ability to use critical thinking to formulate and refine questions and lines of enquiry using historical evidence from a range of sources. Our History curriculum develops pupils’ knowledge of their local area, fostering a sense of community, pride and appreciation of those communities which came before.

Implementation:

  • History is taught based on the National Curriculum for Years 1 to 6 and EYFS Curriculum Framework.
  • A carefully planned whole school curriculum promotes the progression of historical knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills, and the opportunity to revisit and remember previous learning in order to develop an understanding of local, British and world history.
  • Knowledge organisers outline the key new knowledge for each unit and the prior knowledge needed for pupils to make meaningful connections to new learning
  • Our history curriculum focuses on the progression of procedural knowledge within chronology, interpretation and enquiry. These are taught in conjunction with local history, British history, world history knowledge and significant individuals in order to deepen children’s understanding of the topic being studied and secure their understanding of the past.
  • Opportunities to develop children’s local historical knowledge and gain an understanding of their locality’s rich historical significance are at the heart of our curriculum
