Weekly Round Up

Welcome Back to everyone! It sounded like the children had a lovely summer, enjoying the glorious weather.

The children have settled back to work and routines really well this week, and we already have some lovely activities to celebrate in the class showcase below.

Keep a look out on the website calendar and on the dates below for lots of exciting activities and visits coming up in the autumn term. We will also be having class assemblies this term and parental engagement afternoons for you to enjoy.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are Nursery, RB and B1R, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

Early Years

It’s been a wonderful week back in school for Early Years. We have been busy working together and exploring our new areas. We were very excited to get building with our new bricks and construction equipment! We also built a new water system and have been busy pumping the water into the tank. It’s been lovely learning all about each other and making new friendships.

RB

We have had a lovely start to reception.

The children have  been learning about people who help us and have been practising being vets and fighter fighters.

The children have also enjoyed learning about the Three Little Pigs family and have had lots of fun roleplaying the story.

B1R

Blog for B1R: We have had a fantastic first week in B1R. Our new children have been busy learning our routines and all of the children have enjoyed exploring our new areas both in our indoor and outdoor classrooms. This term we are learning about people who help us in our community. The children have loved role playing as police officers and learning about how they keep us.

Uniform and Packed Lunches

Please can we make sure that all jumpers, cardigans and coats and packed lunch bags are clearly labelled with children’s names, so it is easy to find their owners.

We have provided a t shirt and shorts to all children in a bag for PE lessons but they need to have their own plimsols in school please.

Many thanks for your support.

BLOG 15TH JULY 2022

Weekly Round Up

During this busy week all the children have made a successful transition into their new classes.  This time has given them the opportunity to get to know their new teachers and learning assistants.  It has been lovely to welcome Miss Clark and Miss Lowrie to Dormanstown this week who are working with Year 2 and Year 3 respectively.

Thank you for everyone who attended sports day on Tuesday; it was great to see so many parents, carers and friends cheering their children on. There was so much participation, team work and great sports skills seen throughout the afternoon which was wonderful to see.

Our Diamond Standard winners were celebrated at the Trust Awards Ceremony at Middlesbrough Football Club on Thursday.  Many congratulations to all the winners this year, and a special well done to Matilda who won the overall Trust award for Curiosity – a fantastic achievement.

The Year 6 children had a great end to the week with a Careers and Enterprise Workshop led by Middlesbrough Football Club during the morning, followed by their end of year treat at Jump 360 in the afternoon. A great time was had by all.

We also gave the children an end of term celebration with a bouncy castle treat on Friday. Due to the impact Covid has had on attendance this year, each child got a turn on here this term.  However, next year, this will revert back to a 100% attendance and good behaviour treat for children who have achieved this. Friday also saw the children enjoy their Fish Friday Lunch provided by Mellors – it was another delicious end of term treat.

Our last day in the academy is Tuesday 19th July when the children will finish at normal time. We wish good luck to our Year 6 children as they move onto secondary school and hope everyone has a wonderful summer holiday. We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 5th September.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are Year 1 M, 3S, 4HM and B3G, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

We had a fabulous afternoon with parents and helpers. The children enjoyed planning a miniature garden and picking different materials that they would use. They then worked together to create a garden on a paper plate. There was such a variety of gardens created. A super job by all.

YEAR 1 M

Y3S

Year Three invited in parents and carers to share in their learning this half term. Based on the Vikings topic, children and adults worked together to create their own Viking warriors from clay, and it was lovely to see so many families in school together sharing in the children’s learning.

Year 4HM

Year 4 have really enjoyed taking their maths work outside. They have been using their problem solving techniques learnt over the year and applying them to a range of different maths problems. They have shown their ability to  collaboratively to solve them.

B3G

What a few weeks B3G have had. From swimming to transition to Sports Day, it’s been a busy one.

It was wonderful to see the children in the pool and watching them either achieve their 25m or grow in confidence as they moved effectively through the water. To end our focus on History we looked at the effects Margret Thatcher had on the North by focusing on the mining strikes through role play. And finally transitioning in our newbies to their new environment where they’ve all been exceptional as I’m sure you saw on Sports Day! Great effort B3G.

BLOG 8TH JULY 2022

Weekly Round Up

Thank you to everyone who supported our Summer Fayre on Tuesday after school.  The attendance from children, parents, carers and members of the community was fantastic. Thank you for all the donations received also. It was lovely to see such happy, smiling faces enjoying themselves in the sunshine.

Another busy week in the academy with 5H loving their Beamish trip and 2T visiting Danby Moors Centre. Thank you to all the parents/carers who attended the Parental Engagement afternoons for 1M, 3S, B1R and 5H – the children all appreciated your support with their activities and liked having you in school. It was also good to welcome our new Reception parents into school on Monday as well as a few tears being shed when the same group attended their children’s Nursery Graduation on Thursday.

The children should have received their school report on Friday, with the Year 6s receiving theirs on Monday when they return from transition.  Well done on everyone’s achievements this year, and please celebrate these with your child(ren).

All the children will move into their new class on Monday 11th July to transition and get settled in before September. Children will still come in and leave school for the last 7 days through their entrances they have used all year.

Finally, we look forward to welcoming parent/carers to Sports Day on Tuesday 12th July at 1.15pm. Access will be from the side gate next to nursery.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are 2T and B2S, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

YEAR 2

Year 2 have been busy. As part of our Art curriculum we have been looking at sculptures. The artist we studied was Alberto Giacometti. We had to think about How have Alberto Giacometti’s sculptures show emotions?

Giacometti was a Swiss sculpture who made sculptures with different emotions. So, we designed and made our own sculptures with different emotions using pipe cleaners, tin foil and clay. We had to think about all the skills we would need to create our sculptures. We used rolling, wrapping, twisting, mark making and smoothing.  We also had the joy of having our parents in and they helped us to recreate our sculptures.  Some emotions we created were sad, lonely, happy and excited.

B2S

Over the last couple of weeks, the children in B2S have been busy creating clay sculptures in the style of Alberto Giacometti as part of their art projects and baking cupcakes as par of their D+T.

The children worked with their parents to create clay sculptures. They were able to roll, squeeze, squash and manipulate their clay to make their final design. I think the parents enjoyed it just as much as the parents.

In D+T, the children followed a recipe to bake their own cupcakes. They weighed, sieved, mixed and beat the ingredients before putting them in the oven. When they were cool, the children made chocolate butter icing to decorate them. I am sure they will tell you their favourite part was the taste testing afterwards!

Weekly Round Up

What a great end to the week we have had with the TVED Book of the Year awards at Middlesbrough Football Club today. We were able to take a selection of children to enjoy the awards and meet and listen to the authors present. We want to say a HUGE thank you to Mr Mount who organised the event for all the academies in the Trust. The experience of reading such a wonderful mix of texts has really extended the children’s exposure to quality texts and their enjoyment of reading.

We look forward to welcoming more parents into the academy next week for our Summer Fayre on Tuesday, Nursery Graduation on Thursday and our parental engagement afternoons.

We also wish the Year 6 children who are on transition next week lots of luck at their new school.  We are sure having the time at your new school will support you in September, and we look forward to seeing you back on Monday 11th July.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are Nursery, RB and B1R, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

B1R and Nursery

On Thursday 6th June, B1R and Nursery enjoyed a trip to Hardwick Park to take part in a Very Hungry Caterpillar workshop. It was a brilliant day! We went on a Hungry Caterpillar food trail, made our own butterflies, had a minibeast hunt and went for a walk around the beautiful park. We even bumped into the Gruffalo!

RB

Reception visited Newham Grange Farm to learn all about farming.

We had a tour around the large livestock and found out lots of interesting facts about the animals. We also stroked and held the guinea pigs, rabbits and tortoise. The children has a great time in the discovery room, observing the bees, and we had fun milking a cow.

Later we played mini golf and had fun at the park.

It was an amazing day that that we will never forget.

Weekly Round Up

What a great week of weather we have had, and it has been lovely to see all the children playing outside happily in the sunshine during playtimes and lunchtimes. Please continue to send in hats/caps for the children to protect themselves in the sun and apply suncream before they come to school on hot days.

Our Year 6 children were lucky to have Julie in from HeadStart to do an afternoon about transition which is fast approaching for our oldest children.  There were lots of collaborative activities over the afternoon and we were joined by the Year 6s from Wilton Primary Academy also.

5H have been swimming each afternoon this week and many have been determined to achieve their 25m target.

We’ve got a busy few weeks coming up, so please keep a look out for different events on the diary dates below.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are 5H and 5/6M so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

YEAR 5

Last week year 5 learnt all about pastry and the different types. Following this, we created two types of pastry desserts. A puff pastry donut, which we decorated with chocolate and sprinkles, and a short crust jam tart. Both looked great!

5/6M

Year 6 children from DPA and WPA attended a Spark Tees Valley World of Work Event at AV Dawson.  The children learnt about the companies that are based in the local area and their roles through coding.

BLOG 17TH JUNE 2022

Weekly Round Up

We’ve had classes experiencing a range of trips this week with Reception visiting Newham Grange Farm and Nursery and B1R enjoying a day at Hardwick Park.

We also had our Y6 children going to A.V. Dawson’s new headquarters in Middlesbrough for a World of Work at your Feet event where they found out about the range of jobs available within a company, supporting them to be aspirational in the future.

6A and 6M have also been swimming four afternoons this week with Year 5 starting their block of swimming today. It is such an important part of the curriculum for the children to be able to swim 25m.

It was also lovely to have our first parental engagement afternoon when B3G welcomed their parents to support with their curriculum work.

We’ve got a busy few weeks coming up, so please keep a look out for different events on the diary dates below.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are 2T, 3A, 4HM and B3G, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

YEAR 2T

This week in Year 2, we have been learning about money in maths. We have been recognising the value of coins, adding money and making different amounts with the coins that we know.

Our Reading Skills sessions are somewhat different this half term. We have been listening to Jack and the Beanstalk. Using this story we have been some hot seating, discussing what we think of Jack and the Giant and sequencing the story.

YEAR 3A

In Year 3 we have spent the last week planning our food technology unit – burger design!

We have learnt about health and nutrition, how to craft the perfect patty and also considered how to maintain high levels of food hygiene. We had an amazing day creating and eating our food – they were delicious! We tried beef, turkey and chickpea burgers to help us understand how to design a balanced menu.

YEAR 4HM

Over the last couple of weeks, Year 4 have been exploring the physical and human features of where they live. We started by identifying where the North East is located on a map of England, we then used this knowledge to create an annotated plastercine model  that included: the counties of the North East as well as large settlements.

B3G

This half term B3G have enjoyed DT where our focus has been making pastries. We have explored various pastries from shortcrust, filo, choux and puff. We were able to identify that most pastries have the basic ingredients but it’s the process of creating it that varies.

As a class we made 2 different pastries ‘Puff pastry’ and ‘Shortcrust pastry’ with a helping hand from parents. Here are some pictures to show what fun baking can be.

BLOG 10TH JUNE 2022

Weekly Round Up

We hope you enjoyed your jubilee celebrations over the holiday. We have had a great start to the final half term of the year.

We are so proud of our Year 1 children who have been working hard with their phonics and undertook their Phonics Screening Check this week.

The children from Reception to Year 6 have brought home a lovely book to commemorate the queen’s platinum jubilee. It is a journey showing lots of features and events of the queen’s reign so far, and it is a souvenir for the children to keep.

Next week, many year groups will be undertaking assessments, and we know that the children will work very hard on these.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are 1M and B2S, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

Year 1

As part of the Year 1 curriculum, we have been looking at art work by the British artist; Angie Lewin. She created lots of styles of art work using flowers and habitats. Her work is always bright and vibrant. We enjoyed looking at her different styles of art. We have used a view finder to focus on parts of a flower in the style of Angie Lewin. We carefully used our understanding of a variety of mark making skills to draw some flowers.

B2S

Over the last couple of weeks, the children have been busy measuring capacity using lots of different equipment. They were able to find how much liquid different containers could hold and then problem solving with more and less than a litre.

As part of our Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the children got to work with a chef from Mellors the catering company that provide all our school lunches. They worked in the dining hall to make different breads. They were able to take a turn at the different processes and then taste the final product. I think they all enjoyed it very much.

During the Jubilee celebrations, the children learnt all about Queen Elizabeth II and her reign. They completed lots of art and crafts and enjoyed an afternoon of singing and ice pops.

BLOG 27TH MAY 2022

Weekly Round Up

We had a busy last four days to the term with a focus on celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.  The children have undertaken lots of activities linked to this in class, including making portraits of the queen in different media in art which we will be using to make a display in the academy.

On Monday, we were delighted to welcome Urban Kaos into the academy who taught each class “A Royal Mash Up” of dances throughout the queen’s reign. Please enjoy watching this on Facebook.  Children and adults had a great time dancing to the familiar tracks.

We had great support for our Nursery and Reception Stay and Play sessions this week – we hope you all enjoyed coming into the academy and working with your children.

On Wednesday, we had Nick from Mellors in the academy who undertook workshops with three year groups on bread and pasta making. All the children were able to take part in this hands-on experience which resulted in some delicious outcomes.

We are sorry that we had to cancel our Jubilee singalong on Thursday, but the weather got the better of us at the last minute! We have recorded all of the songs and will put the performance on Facebook for everyone to watch.  The children enjoyed learning and singing songs from across the reign of the queen, and Year 3 even showed us their recorder playing skills.

Have a lovely half term and enjoy the long bank holiday celebrations. We look forward to seeing the children back on Monday 6th June.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are Nursery, Reception and B1R so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

Nursery

Nursery had a very special stay and play this week to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee! It was wonderful to have parents and carers back in school enjoying lots of fun activities with their children. From making split pin guards to decorating our own royal crowns…there was a real buzz in the air!

Reception

Reception have been reading the story the Lighthouse Keepers Lunch.  We made lighthouses using recycled materials, construction, dough and paint. We even made our own zip wire and sent food from the cottage on the cliff to Mr Grinlin in his lighthouse.

We have been doing lots of practical activities in maths. The children have had lots of fun subtracting numbers, making number bonds to 10 and sorting 3Dshapes.

Lots of collaboration and imagination has been used in the construction area and we have made some incredible structures.

Great team work Reception Class!

B1R

Last Wednesday, B1R enjoyed a lovely walk to Foxrush Farm Woodland as part of our woodland topic. We used our woodland checklists to help us to observe the environment. We also listened to a Percy the Park Keeper story whilst enjoying a yummy snack on our picnic blankets. All of the children were amazing. Well done B1R!

Diary Dates and Reminders

Jubilee Bingo and Activities

BLOG 20TH MAY 2022

Well done to our Year 2 children who have worked very hard and had great focus during their SATs this week.  Just one more test to go on Monday.

Thank you to Lollipops for hosting the Uniform event on Tuesday; we hope parents found this useful to make their selections.

The children from B1R enjoyed a lovely walk to Foxrush on Wednesday afternoon; the weather was very kind to them too!

We look forward to our Jubilee Celebrations this coming week. (see below)

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are 5H, 5/6M and 6A, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

Year 5H

This week year 5 have been carrying out some interesting investigations on friction. We have discussed examples of when friction may be helpful and when it may not be helpful before testing how different surfaces impacted the distance a car travels.

Year 5/6 M

We have been thinking about activities that can help to improve our mental well-being.

In science we have been learning about the heart and the circulatory system.  We acted out how the blood circulates around the body.

Year 6 A

This week we have started our new Science topic – Animals Including Humans. First, we began by learning about the circulatory system. Once we had learnt what the four components were, we constructed a whole class drama to show how the blood moves around the body. We have also been learning about blood and we made some blood smoothies!

Diary Dates and Reminders

Jubilee Celebrations

During our Jubilee celebrations on the 26th May, the children will be able to dress up in red, white and blue coloured clothes for the day to celebrate this important event. They will undertake various activities throughout the week linked to the royal family and the 70 years of the queen’s reign.

On Monday, each class will have a session with Urban-Kaos where they will learn a “A Royal Mash Up” dance.  We will then perform to each other at the end of the day and hope to put snippets out on FaceBook.

On the 26th May, Mellors will be serving a buffet style lunch for the Jubilee celebrations with lots of choices for the children to select from in the lunch hall.

At 2.30pm, parents and carers are invited to the academy (weather permitting) to watch the children perform songs from across the era of the queen’s reign. We will open the side gate near Nursery for parents to come around the back of the academy.

Walking Bingo

Please bring your Bingo Board back into school by Tuesday 24th May as we have two free swim/gym passes as prizes from the Beat the Street team, and we will be selecting a winner to receive them.

BLOG 13TH MAY 2022

Weekly Round Up

It has been a busy week in the academy with the Year 6 children undertaking their SATs. We are very proud of the focus and determination they have shown, both this week and during the rest of the year. A huge well done to everyone in Year 6, including all their wonderful teachers.

The Year 2 children will be focusing on their SATs next week, so we would like to wish them all the best of luck with their tasks too.

It has been Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme has been Loneliness.  Each class has undertaken activities and Mrs Boyes supported everyone by putting lots of inspirational quotes up around the academy.

Class Showcase

This week, our featured classes are Year 1M, 3S, 4HM and B3G, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.

Year 1 have learnt about the features mammals have and can recognise the we are mammals because of our features.

Year 3 have had an exciting start to the summer term!

In Science we have been exploring what plants need to survive, and proving that they rely on water by changing the colour of flowers using food dye.

Our art topic on William Morris has been a huge success, and all the children have created beautiful wallpaper, using printed blocks they have designed and made themselves.

The TVED Book of the Year competition has also been very exciting for our pupils, and the children are doing incredibly well reading, reviewing and sharing ideas about all 10 books!

This week in science, Year 4 have started a new topic, ‘What happens when you eat food’. We have started by looking at the role of teeth in the digestive process -we have explored this through a investigating the amount of sugar in drinks and learning how sugar leads to an increase in plaque and how this destroys tooth enamel. In order to investigate this, we  planned and carried out an fair test using eggs shells that act similar to the enamel on our teeth.

What a wonderful start to the summer term B3G.

As part of our Geography focus the children have been exploring what Climate Change is and what impact it has. They have looked at how the increase in population has contributed and how animals have been affected by it. In Science we have started to investigate ‘When is a change reversible or irreversible?’ We have explored the properties of various materials, such as, does it allow electricity to flow through? And observed which substances dissolve in water. So if possible, take this opportunity to carryout out your own dissolving experiments at home.

Walk to School Week and Walking Bingo

As part of Walk to School Week, the Beat the Street team have organised a Walking Bingo activity.  We are asking children to look for the items on the bingo board below and mark them off if they see them next week on their way to school.  Please return the board to school by Tuesday 24th May, and we will be choosing some winners from within the academy.

Diary Dates and Reminders

During our Jubilee celebrations on the 26th May, the children will be able to dress up in red, white and blue coloured clothes for the day to celebrate the queen’s reign. We are also inviting parents/carers to our end of the week celebrations at 2.15pm on Thursday 26th May to listen to the songs we have learnt for the Jubilee. This will be on the playground at the back of school (weather dependent!) We will share more details about our celebrations in next week’s BLOG.

Footprints in the Community

We have recently signed up to work with the Footprints in the Community to enable us to support our families. Anyone who may find themselves in difficulty with food or other resources may contact Mrs Sherwood where she will be able to give them advice with the correct support. Parents can do this discretely by asking to speak to her or make an appointment. This service not only provides food through their network of foodbank centres, but they can support with setting up a new home, providing essential items for a new baby and much more.

Please follow the link for more information, and we also have a leaflet on the website and in the academy entrance:

www.footprintsinthecommunity.co.uk

Bikes on the Plaza

Please can we remind all children and parents/carers that, for the safety of all, bikes and scooters must not be ridden on the Plaza.  Children must push their bike or scooter to park outside Nursery. No electric vehicles should be present on the Plaza.  Many thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

Contact Details

It is vital that we can get in touch with all contacts for your child in case of an emergency.

Please ensure that the academy has the correct contact number for yourself and any other contacts.

We also regularly send messages to parents via email, so please ensure the academy have an email address for you.

Lunch Menu

Next week’s menu will be week 1.

Attendance

Congratulations to 6A who have won our Awesome competition this week with 100% attendance.
