We have had a great week this week, and as we approach our final weeks of the term all the staff would like to say a huge thank you to all our families and community for their ongoing support. This week teachers have been looking through assessments and books as they begin to prepare children for the next year of their school adventure, and it has been incredibly clear how much progress all pupils have made, and the unbelievable difference between the work they completed in September and now – and we are very proud of them all!
In academy, we have had several visits and activities this week including: the reception Funky Monkey sport festival, which include balancing, obstacle races and a treasure hunt; parental engagement sessions in both B1R and Year 6 – it was lovely to see so many of you in attendance and sports day for some of our youngest pupils in nursery who were just amazing!
Next week sees the start of some of our Year 6 students transition to secondary schools, and we wish them all luck on their upcoming visits – we are sure they will be incredible!
Let’s see what B1R, B2S and B3G have been up to lately.
This half term, B1R have been enjoying the glorious weather and have been spending a lot of time outside.

We have enjoyed challenging ourselves on the playground obstacle course, riding around on the bikes and exploring new areas in our outdoor area.

Once again, B2S have been incredibly busy with lots of learning. This week we have been reading Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been acting out the story and we have been retelling the story in our books.

In maths, we have been learning to subtract in lots of different ways. We have been using the beads to take away, crossing out pictures and using a number line.

Lastly, we had a parental engagement and our parents came in and enjoyed having some stay and play time with B2S. We coloured in, showed our parents our independent areas , built Lego and read to each other. It was a very nice and calm afternoon.
B3G have been busy this half term. We have been focusing on what happens to our food when we eat. This was introduced by focusing on teeth and recognising that we have canines too. Maths has been fun and busy.
The children had to work out how many seconds it took to complete an activity and work out who was either the fastest or best at hooping.

Also our year 5’s have had the opportunity to visit the local secondary school and take part in sports, science and DT activities.

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.
Which class will be the first to receive that treat?
This weeks winners are……….

78.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence.
With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

This week we had 204 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊
Can you get 100% next week?
We strive to accommodate parents/carers with appointment times within the academy.
Unfortunately we have noticed that many appointments have been missed, occasionally this may be due to unforeseen circumstances.
If you have to cancel and/or re-arrange your appointment, please ensure you contact the academy as soon as possible.
Failing to turn up for an appointment and not contacting the academy to cancel it has an adverse effect on other parents/carers appointment times. This can also take valuable staff time that could have been utilised by other parents.

Come and join us for Sport’s day on Monday 17th July beginning at 1pm.
Weather permitting the children will be taking part in lots of different sport activities on our school field with medals galore to be won!
If you are feeling competitive there may even be some adult races to join it whilst you are here. We look forward to seeing you for a fun filled afternoon!

Tickets are now on sale from the Academy office![]()
£1 per strip , check out our 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize.
Lunch choices next week will be Menu 2.

What a week it has been!
We Will Rock You was a huge success, and after three full days at the Arc, we were absolutely delighted with how well our children performed, behaved and upheld our school values. The days were long and hot, but all the children coped admirably and gave 100% at all times.
Our Trust CEO Mrs Morley sent a lovely message after the event which really summarised how we felt about all involved, here is a snippet from the message:
I wanted to say a huge thank you to each and everyone of you for your role in delivering the exceptional We Will Rock You performances this week. The team’s endeavours, especially the camaraderie, care and courage shown, has been transformational. It really demonstrates the power of music, performance and the broader arts on both life chances and life quality. It’s not just ‘rock music’ that changes lives as the play said – it’s love.
Elsewhere, children have been working hard in their learning, completing the last weeks before they move up a year! All year groups had the chance to participate in a workshop organised by Flying Futures, talking about a range of social issues and how we can come together to improve our communities.
We look forward to bringing you more news next week!
Time for 5H and 6A to show us what they have been up to, let’s have a look.
In Y5 we have really enjoyed learning about the history or America and in particular how the indigenous people of America were impacted when the country was colonised.
We have looked at how the first visitors to America would have felt and what they would have saw.
We wrote postcards back home to families to tell them all about the amazing reasons to travel to America.

We designed posters to convince Native Americans to join the civil war for both the Confederates and the Union.

Finally, we looked at how different Presidents had impacted the Native Americans through their policies and beliefs.

In math’s in year six, we have been learning about ratio.
We compared the quantities of a recipe to make a fruit punch for 4 people. We then worked out the quantities for the class so we could buy the right amount.

Working in pairs, we worked out the amounts for two people and we worked together to make our fruit punch. Made with different juices and fresh fruit, we all thought it was delicious!

It has been a scorching week this week!
We have loved the chance to open up the field, and to see the children playing games each break and lunch time with each other. Our dinner staff have been putting out a huge variety of fun equipment and play experiences, alongside sports like football and basketball – which has meant some wonderful sunny play sessions and happy children returning to class for work!
Year 2 loved their parental drop-in this week, and had an amazing time showcasing their art skills, and teaching their parents how to create metal sculptures in Giacometti style!
Year 1 and Year 4 have been working hard completing phonics and times table assessments, and we are incredibly proud of their hard work – all children showed an amazing attitude, and we are confident they achieved as well as they possibly could – thank you to all our families for supporting the children in their revision.
We Will Rock You takes place next week, so this is a final reminder that you can buy tickets on The Arc website to join us on Tuesday or Wednesday for what promises to be an amazing show!
With temperatures looking high between now and the holidays, please continue to send your children prepared for the hot weather – we hope the forecasts are correct!
Enjoy your weekends!

Let’s see what 3L and 4H have been up to since last time.
Year 3 are enjoying learning about Ancient Egypt in history.
They have been learning about how the Ancient Egyptians preserved bodies through mummifications and the different Canopic jars they used to place the organs in.

They have also looked into the importance of The River Nile for trade, transport, papyrus, food and crops.
It has been lovely to see how excited year 3 are about this topic.

Year 4 have been making excellent progress in their French lessons over the past few weeks.
They have been working hard to master a range of key skills, including counting up to 20, asking each other how they are doing, and learning the months of the year and their birthdays.

I am delighted with the progress that Year 4 students have made in French.

They have actively participated in various activities such as games and role-playing exercises, which have made learning French fun and engaging.

Welcome back the last half term of the year, we can’t believe we are down to the last seven weeks before the summer, and we have so much to fit in to an exciting last two months!
This week, Year 5 and 6 were visited by Thrive, who delivered a session based on educating them on the dangers of exploitation and how they can be aware of the challenges they may face. Rubies have also worked with a group of our older girls, helping them to understand their inner strength and empower them to grow their self-esteem.
We Will Rock You rehearsals have been in full swing, with students moving between the academies to practice, including a lovely day when we welcomed children from across TVED to our school for a day of singing and acting! Don’t forget you can still purchase tickets to the event, which is taking place on the 20th and 21st June at The Arc in Stockton.
Keep an eye out for more dates over the next few weeks including: sports day, summer fayre and lots more end of term events!
Let’s see what Class 1T and 2C have been up to since we last saw them.
On the last day of term, 1T had an exciting visit from Rob and his animal friends at ZooLabs. This was part of our Science topic about animals.
We learnt facts, held the animals and discussed their classification and diet. We got to hold a snake, a giant snail and a cockroach.

We were able to stroke a rat and we looked closely at a tarantula and a frog. It was a fantastic experience!

In Year 2, we have been learning about the artwork of Alberto Giacometti and how he represents figures in his artwork.
We have spent time looking at position and proportion and have persevered to manipulate materials into different shapes.

We have designed some wonderful sculptures in the style of Giacometti and created our final pieces using wire and tin foil. Look at the photos to see our finished sculptures!

And in a flash the half term is over!
We can’t believe how quickly time has passed, and that we only have one half-term left of the year, but we are delighted to share another exciting week of learning in the academy.
Trips have taken place again this week, with groups of students heading to Locke Park, Redcar rugby club, Outwood Academy and The Riverside Stadium for experiences linked to their learning, to practice teamworking skills, experience secondary science lessons and to celebrate reading respectively.
Our We Will Rock You group are working hard with Miss Cockburn and Mrs Smuk to learn lines, dance routines and the drama they will need for the trust performance next month.
KS1 were also visited by Zoolabs, who brought a range of animals for them to meet – including two incredibly cute rats!
We hope all our families have a relaxing week off, that the sun shines and we will see you all in June!
Let’s see what Nursery and Reception have been up to the last few weeks.
Nursery had a wonderful time at their Gruffalo stay and play this week. They have enjoyed retelling the story, making Gruffalo crumble and even performed a Gruffalo dance to their parents!

Reception class were very excited to visit Saltburn beach for our educational visit.

We have been learning about the seaside and wanted to see it for ourselves. All of the children had fun exploring the sand and made lots of sandcastles.

Later in the day we walked to the train station, and we were super excited to ride on the miniature railway. The guard waved his flag and blew his whistle, and we were off.

The children enjoyed their packed lunches in the Italian Gardens despite a little shower of rain.

We ended the day having fun at the park before getting back on the coach. This was just before the heavens opened and it poured down with rain.

A lovely day was had by everyone!

What a week it has been!
We have had children out on trips, celebration events and parental engagement sessions throughout the week and it has been amazing to see how well the children have represented our school in each activity.
Year 2 have been working incredibly hard through their KS1 SATs this week, showing off how much progress they have made and applying their knowledge to their questions – we are very proud of them all.
Reception had a great day at the beach this week – spending time in Saltburn exploring, creating and asking lots of questions to extend their understanding. A big thank you to all the parent helpers who volunteered to come along for the day!
Year 3 headed out on a historical trip to the Dorman Museum to learn more about the Egyptians. They had a fantastic day handling artefacts, investigating the mysteries of the pyramids and learning more about some of the gruesome burial practices the pharaohs used – why not ask the children about what they learnt?
Year 4 parents dropped in to the academy for a Monet inspired art session on Wednesday, and together with the children created some beautiful watercolour paintings, based on the photographs they took at Locke Park. Year 5 also invited in their families to help them with their artwork, and we are excited to share their results soon!
Our Brilliant Club have also been to Newcastle University this week to celebrate the work they have undertaken this year – they have done some amazing work and we think they are great!
One more week until the holidays, we look forward to sharing more news with you soon!
This week it’s the turn of B1R, B2S and B3G to show what they’ve been up to since recently.
For the last couple of weeks, B1R have been learning about our new King, King Charles III, and the royal family.

We read the story The King’s Runaway Crown and enjoyed retelling and reenacting the story.
We also made our own Union Jack bunting, set up afternoon tea parties in our home area and mud kitchen and built Buckingham Palace using wooden blocks.

As part of our coronation celebrations, the children made their own crowns and flags to show off to our parents and carers at the coronation parade.

B2S have been very busy the past few weeks. In English, we have been planting sunflower seeds and writing instructions. Our seeds are now growing and are looking really good.

Also, we have been retelling the story of The Little Red Hen. We have sequenced pictures of the story and started writing it.

This week is Mental Health Week and we have been talking about anxiety and what that means. We looked at ways to help ourselves relax and talked about all the feelings that we may have if we are feeling anxious.
Lastly, in music we have been playing the boom whackers. We have been reading music and playing along.
What a lovely half term. The children have been busy and working hard. From colour to Coronation and back again. Here are some of the highlights we have enjoyed over the last few weeks.

The children really enjoyed attending the Athletics Festival at Middlesbrough Sports Village. The children showed great sportsmanship and skill, trialing out various activities.

RE has been insightful, looking at what colour symbolises in various religions, which led us nicely into Art where our focus has been Monet.
The children have looked closely at how impressionists use light and dark to create an impression of what they see.

Using Monet’s technique of small dashes the children have seen how small details contribute to the bigger picture.

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Last week saw the crowning of King Charles III, and school had an amazing day celebrating the event too!
Across the academy staff planned a range of fun, creative tasks for the children to enjoy celebrating British values and the dawning of a new era for our country. Key Stage 1 created beautiful crowns and flags using collage, crafts and LOTS of glitter!

Our older children enjoyed a traditional games session on the field, mixing year groups for a huge game of rounders, as well as partaking in a range of teambuilding activities.

Throughout the day our royal selfie station toured the school for children to get a picture as the king himself, our pose in coronation picture frame, which caused a stir in each class when it arrived!

Our lunch staff at Mellor’s provided coronation lunch boxes, where all children sat together in rows to enjoy a feast including hot dogs, chicken strips and jelly and ice-cream!

Mr Nixon our music teacher has also been working with all year groups to learn the national anthem, so as the day drew to a close all classes paraded around the yard in their creations before singing together for the onlooking parents (thank you to everyone who attended, we were amazed at the volume of support for the children!) before making their way home to celebrate some more!

We hope you all enjoyed the event as much as we did!

It’s been a royal week in school this week!
Our celebrations were amazing – we loved sharing a part of the coronation weekend with all our families, and having the chance to give our children fun and exciting experiences based around the event.
Picnic lunch boxes were created by Mellors, our amazing caterers and the lunch hall was a buzz throughout the service. All children had the chance to create crowns, flags or coronation themed crafts, before sharing the national anthem with their parents and carers.
Elsewhere in the academy, B3G children had the chance to attend an athletics festival where they completed a range of events – the six hundred metre run was a roaring success, and all the children returned to the academy proud of their efforts.
Similarly, Year 1 have also been able to attend sporting enrichment this week – heading out to The Redcar and Eston partnership event where their movement skills were tested through a range of sporting events.
Year 6 continue to work hard in the build up to next week’s Key Stage 2 SAT’s tests, and have been a credit to themselves and their families with the hard work and positive attitude they have maintained throughout. We wish them the best of luck in their exams next week.
Finally, we wish our whole community a lovely long weekend, filled with celebration and fun as the country celebrates the crowning of our new King!
5H and 6A are ready to show us what they’ve been doing the past few weeks,
Last week, Year 5 took a trip to Outwood Redcar. The children took part in a Design Technology lesson. Some children designed their own logo and turned their design into their very own badge. The other half of the class got to make a rocky road. The children really enjoyed their first experience at a secondary school and are excited to return to take part in more lessons.

In Science we have been looking at forces and in particular looking at friction and how different surfaces can produce different amounts of friction. We rolled a toy car down a ramp and surprisingly found that grass produced the most amount of friction but in our experiment, sandpaper produced the least!

Year 6 had a visit from the army soldiers from Catterick. During the session, they learnt valuable team building and resilience skills.
They had to build a strong sculpture that would not collapse which involved lots of problem solving and team work. Some children even got to try on some of the army uniform and many commented on the weight.
After asking the soldiers questions about possible careers in the army, many of the children were inspired at what roles and jobs they could aspire to when they are older.

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.
Which class will be the first to receive that treat?
This weeks winners are………..

32.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences.
Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence.
With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

This week we had 224 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊
Can you get 100% next week?

Another week is over, and with a long weekend ahead it is lovely to reflect on another wonderful week in school.
We have had some fantastic clubs this week including our superb choir – who are now practicing Queen hits for the upcoming Trust performance, some important – and potentially lifesaving CPR training at our first aid club, as well as a variety of sports and athletic activities.
Our Year 5 children attended the first of a series of transition events at Outwood Academy this week, with the focus being on how DT looks in secondary school. Some of the cooking creations they returned with looked delicious!
We are thankful this week to Westfield Farm, whose volunteers have begun the job of weeding and replanting some of the flower beds around school ready for the children to help grow flowers and crops in the summer.
Finally, thank you also to our families for supporting the children creating t-shirt designs for the Middlesbrough Football Club competition – we have had some amazing entries!
Wishing all our families and friends a safe, relaxing bank holiday!
It’s time for 3L and 4H to show how hard they’ve been working.
Year 3 have enjoyed learning about Passover during their RE sessions. They particularly enjoyed acting out. The story of Passover and discussing the 10 plagues of Egypt.
We have also started our new science topic on plants and started by labelling the parts of a plant and their functions. The children are very excited about the experiments planned within the next few weeks.

Year 4 have started to work towards answering the question, ‘What happens to your food when you eat it?’ In this topic we will find out what happens to your food once it enters your mouth, until it leaves the body through excretion.

This week we have focused on the start of the digestive process by focusing what happens in the mouth and the role of saliva and our teeth. As well as investigating the impact that sugary and acidic drinks can have on our teeth.

Welcome back to a new term at Dormanstown!
We hope everyone had a fantastic holiday, as we look forward to warmer nights and royal coronations!
This week in school it has been lovely to see so many smiling faces, and to witness how quickly and positively children have returned to their learning.
We have seen fantastic work in all areas of school including: thoughtful consideration of religion and culture, amazing myths and legends stories as well as lots of progress in Winning With Numbers – and we are delighted with how all children have started the new term!
We have also been visited this week by Rita and Grace from Cleveland Fire Service, who delivered an assembly to our KS2 children based on fire safety and their new initiative Play With Passion Not Fire.
They also dropped off some footballs for school, and have been in the community spreading their message and giving rewards to children who support their fire awareness message.
We look forward to sharing more events with you in the upcoming weeks!
1T and 2C are showing us what they’ve been learning in school.
This week was the started our new topic in PE where we are learning how to play bat and ball sports. We remembered how to hold the bat correctly and we are developing our hand eye coordination.

In DT, the children have been exploring mechanisms and have been designing and making a moving vehicle.
We have learnt how to join wood together to make a vehicle frame and understand how to make a structure stronger and more stable. We know how to use tools safely and enjoyed using a hacksaw to cut wood.
