Weekly Round up

It has been a busy week again this week, filled with learning and fun!

B4 invited parents in for their parental engagement this week – and it was lovely to see how proud the children were to share their learning and work together on each activity.

Across school, children have been undertaking history as part of their wider curriculum, and the corridors have been buzzing with conversations about Greek gods, The Blitz and stone age hunter gatherers! Why not ask your child about what they have been learning?

Next week is shaping up to be a busy one, with trips for several year groups as well as the choir, a Halloween disco as well as PD day on the last Friday.

Finally, this week saw the chance to reflect on how children are reading at home, and it was a joy to read some of the comments written in children’s home readers about how hard they are working. We are eager to explore how to continue to make links between home and school reading – and will be sending out some guidance and strategies in the upcoming weeks. Please do continue to read regularly with your child, and to ensure they have their book and reading record each day – as this helps us to reinforce and reward the work you are doing.

Enjoy your weekend (and good luck to England in the rugby!)

Class Round up

Let’s heard the latest from Year 1, Year 2 and B2

Show Racism the Red Card

All of the children dressed up in red today to show Racism the Red Card.

We have been learning that every person deserves to be treated  with respect.

Year 1

The year 1 children have worked super hard so far this half term.

This week we have been writing a set of instructions. To make sure we wrote specific and clear instructions we decorated our own biscuits.

After this we tested them to make sure they tasted good!

We took lots of pictures to stick in with our piece of writing so when someone uses our instructions they will be able to see exactly what their biscuit should look like.

Next, we wrote our instructions, we made sure to use bossy verbs such as mix and spread. We also practiced saying our instructions out loud to check they made sense and were clear so our reader would know exactly what to do.

Year 2

Over the past few weeks in Science, Year 2 have been focusing on the topic of materials and conducting a range of experiments to deepen our understanding.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the properties of different materials and investigating their suitability for various purposes. One experiment involved finding out which material would make the best umbrella.

The children had to consider which material would be most waterproof and which would provide the best protection from the rain.

We spent time testing the materials to see which were waterproof and which were absorbent. We discovered that cellophane was the best.

We have also been manipulating materials through stretching, twisting, bending, and squashing. The children were fascinated by how materials can change shape.

B2

B2 have been very busy this week.

This week we have been reading and watching clips so that we can write a fact file about bears.

We have written some sentences about bears.

Here they are-

In History, we are answering the question ‘What was life like for a child in Redcar?’

We have been talking about when we were born and looking at our baby photos.

We have also been learning about special events in our lives. Some special events are when we learned to walk or when we had our first birthday.

On an afternoon, we have started ‘Attention to Autism.’ Mrs Seddon surprises the children with something inside the mystery bucket.

We love this activity. Then we have Dough Disco where we make shapes and control our dough with our hands / fingers.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

Missed Learning

58.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 211 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊

Can you get 100% next week?

Missed Appointments

We strive to accommodate parents/carers with appointment times within the academy.

Unfortunately we have noticed that many appointments have been missed, occasionally this may be due to unforeseen circumstances.

If you have to cancel and/or re-arrange your appointment, please ensure you contact the academy as soon as possible.

Failing to turn up for an appointment and not contacting the academy to cancel it has an adverse effect on other parents/carers appointment times. This can also take valuable staff time that could have been utilised by other parents.

Weekly Round up

We can’t believe school has been back 6 weeks already!

We are so pleased with how well children have responded to their new classes, and the amount of amazing work going on throughout the academy.

This week Mrs McDonald looked at the work children have completed in geography and history, and was amazed by how well children presented information, and how well they could remember their learning. Year 1 and 2 are also completing their Read Write Inc assessments this week, and we are delighted by how much progress they have made, whether it is learning sounds, reading words or answering questions based on a text – KS1 children are working incredibly hard on their reading!

A letter will be sent next week to introduce all our KS1 families into school to learn more about Read Write Inc, and to see children learning with their group. We look forward to welcoming our community in to school!

Elsewhere, Year 2 and Year 4 were visited this week by Rab from The National Literacy Trust, who came to talk to them about the importance of reading, and gift them a book each to help spread the love of stories. It has been lovely to see so many excited readers across school – and to see the improvement in Golden Tickets this week – keep it up everyone!

Class Round up

Nursery, Reception and B1 are here to share what they’ve been up to since we last saw them.

Nursery

This week Nursery have been exploring mark making through paint and music!

We had to tune into different sounds and the result was a fantastic masterpiece!

Reception

Reception have been learning about people who help us within our community. We have had some wonderful visits by some truly amazing people.

Becky and Claire, members of the Ladies of Steel, visited Reception recently. They talked about how ladies of steel were created, how they help people of all ages in the community and how they are able to provide this support.

Many of our children have been to a Ladies of Steel event before and are extremely grateful for this charity. We are helping them with ideas to improve our local park by sending them our ideas.

School is still very thankful for the support Ladies of Steel gave during Covid by providing packed lunches for children during lockdown.

Last week, Tess the guide dog and her handler Allison visited Reception to talk about Allison’s life, how guide dogs are trained and how they help people? It was humbling and inspirational visit that the children thoroughly enjoyed.

We are looking forward to more visits from more amazing people in the coming weeks.

B1

This term in B1 we are learning about people who help us.

Last week, we learned about how dentists help us to keep our teeth clean and healthy. The children enjoyed dressing up and role playing as dentists to clean the very dirty teeth!

This week we are learning about how doctors help to keep our bodies healthy and how they help us when we are poorly or hurt.

B1 have also been reading the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

The children have enjoyed making porridge for the bears in our role play area and acting out the story. We have also created our own bear art work.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

This weeks winners are……….

B1, B2 with 100% and Y2 with 99%

Missed Learning

44.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 226 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊

Can you get 100% next week?

Diary Dates and Reminders

World Mental Health Day

On Tuesday 10th of October we took part in Mental Health Day.

All children were given a booklet to complete at home to help them talk about their thoughts and feelings with their families.

This was an idea we used from ITV’s Britain’s Get Talking, by Ant and Dec, to help children to open up. The children did a range of activities across the school which included yoga, deep breathing, exercise and of course lots of talking.

We hope our families continue to talk and support each other to share their thought and feelings.

Weekly Round up

This week nursery and reception were lucky enough to be visited by a working guide dog – supporting the learning they have been undertaking in their classroom areas. They were able to talk to her owner, and learn about how amazing each dog is, and also the way blind and partially sighted people are able to navigate each day. The children were incredibly thoughtful, and were fascinated by the whole session!

Year 6 represented school in a tag rugby tournament, where they pitted their skills against many other local schools. We are very proud of how well the team faired, particularly given the mixed of experienced and novice rugby players we had in our squads. The organisers at Redcar Rugby Club were all highly complimentary of how well our children performed!

It was lovely to see so many parents in the academy on Thursday for the Year 5 math’s engagement session. Speaking to you after the event it was clear how impressed you all were, not only with the difficultly of the work the children completed, but also the resilience children had when faced with some tricky problems.

Next week Year 1 and 2 children will be completing a short Read Write Inc assessment to ensure they are in the correct group for their phonics sessions, and to celebrate the progress they are making. Be sure to ask them about what colour book they are on! We will also be announcing a reading parental session to explore how we can support children with their reading at home – it would be lovely to see all our KS1 parents there!

Class Showcase

This week let’s see the latest from Year 5, Year 6 and B4.

Year 5 Mr Williams Class

What a fantastic week it has been in Y5! We have begun tackling formally multiplying by a 2 digit number and we even got to show this off at our parental engagement session.

The children were so pleased to be able to share the knowledge they had learnt so far this term. In English we are writing invitations and learning how to use persuasive language and in reading we are enjoying the wordless text called ‘Quest’.

Year 6 Miss Arkless Class

In Year 6, we have been investigating light and dark in our Science lessons. So far we have found objects that are opaque, transparent and translucent. We have also used our inquiry skills to see if light travels in straight lines.

We used: pipe, book edges, pens and holes in paper to investigate this. Some of us realised we could change the direction the light travels by reflecting it off a mirror, and we managed to reflect it off many mirrors to completely change the direction.

B4 Miss Gruenfelds Class

What a fun filled few weeks B4!

It’s been a great start to the term. The children have been fabulous making us very happy teachers. We have worked hard in English and Maths, as per usual, and in Science, we have been taking a closer look at the life cycles of plants and animals.

The children worked their way through the Viking era discovering how fierce but smart they were, and how they left after the battle at Stamford Bridge leading to the Battle of Hasting performed by jelly babies.

We are now exploring North Europe and looking at Scandinavia in Geography. In spite of our hard work we have also managed to make some crazy medicine during Roald Dahl day, whilst other adventured out at Peat Rigg.

We have also upheld our sportsmanship and skills during the Redcar College Multi-skills Invasion Games Festival.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

Weekly Round up

This week has seen lots of visitors in the school (some of them very important!) and we are delighted to say that every single guest has come away full of praise as to what they have seen! The children have been a credit to you all, and their friendly, caring demeanor has been recognised by everyone. One visitor went as far as to say that they had never heard a discussion about art as impressive as the one they heard between a group of our Year 4’s!

Elsewhere Y5 have been working hard on their Sports Leader Training, working with the Redcar and Eston Sports Partnership. They have been considering how to be part of a team, collaborate and to help support and encourage others when undertaking sporting activities – well done Year 5!

Finally, Friday saw the annual MacMillan Cancer Support bake sale – and we were blown away by the generous donations of our community. Staff were rushed off their feet at home time and we are excited to hear the final count of how much was raised for such an important cause.

Have a great weekend!

Class Showcase

This week it’s time to see the latest from Year 3 and Year 4

Year 3 Miss Matthews

This week Year 3 have enjoyed sequencing the story of the Stone Age boy within English.

Everyone worked so well in their pairs to sequence the story step by step to start re-telling it.

In PE they have been focusing on gymnastics and different balances they can perform with their partner. We have learnt that a balance needs to be help for at least 4 seconds.

Well done keep it up.

Year 4 Miss Hogarth

This term  in science, Year 4 have been working hard to answer the question, ‘How do we hear?’ In this topic we have explored how we hear sounds starting from an object vibrating, up until the soundwave enters our ears.

We then delved deeper to investigate how sound travels through different mediums including using string telephones to explore what happens to sound when it travels through a solid, as well as this we discovered how soundwaves travel through water.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round Up

We have certainly felt the chill in the air this week (along with some very windy days!) but that hasn’t managed to dull the learning going on at Dormanstown!

Thursday saw our children celebrate National Fitness Day, and across school we saw activities both indoors and out where children had the chance to practice their teamwork, motor skills as well as prove their stamina and determination. Mr Williams our PE lead was delighted with all year groups, and all staff commented how hard children tried in their endeavours.

Elsewhere classes have been coming towards the end of their first writing units, and it has been amazing to read some of the stories and reports which have been created. Children have thought hard about their vocabulary, and it is clear that they are taking great pride in their presentation – we look forward to sharing work with our families and community soon.

Well done to Year 5 who won the highest percentage of Golden Tickets for reading this week with a huge 95%, closely followed on 93% by Year 4. Thank you to all our families for supporting your child to read at home.

We look forward to sharing more news next week!

Class Showcase

What a fantastic Multi-skills event B3 and B4 attended. The children enjoyed taking part in the various games working on the skills that facilitated that sport.

Peat Rigg

This week saw our eldest children head off into the wilds of the moors to Peat Rigg!

For some it was their first nights away from home, for others a chance to push themselves and test their limits and fears but for every child it was an amazing opportunity to bond with their friends at the start of an important year of school.

From the first moment to the last every child was AMAZING! They conquered their nerves and threw themselves into every activity with enthusiasm and energy. They climbed trees, scaled rivers, zipped through the trees and scrambled in caves, and were an absolute credit throughout.

They supported each other and helped to keep the group safe, all the while having the BEST time!

We are so proud of the group, and hope you enjoy looking at the photographs of our adventure below!

Welcome back

Welcome back to our first full week of 2023, and what a week it has been!

It has been amazing to see so many happy, smiling faces as children come back into their new classes, and all the staff have been delighted with how hard children have worked, and how well they have settled back into school!

We are very proud of all our pupils, and teachers all agreed that choosing Pot of Gold winners this week was incredibly difficult!

All children should now have received their reading books and home contact reading records. We love reading at our school, and would like to remind you that we do ask children to read at least three times at home over the week, and that if they do so they can win a free book each week in our Golden Ticket draw. We also run our pre-school Starbooks library session every Tuesday, which all families are welcome to join. If you have any questions about reading please speak with your child’s class teacher, or with Mr Mount the school reading lead.

We are looking forward to letting you know more dates for this term as the diary starts to fill up, so keep an eye on the diary dates below and School Gateway messages for more events coming up over the next few weeks.

Class showcase

No Class showcase this week, but some of the classes have shared with us some pictures of their first week.

B1

B2

Hi everyone and welcome back!

This week has been very exciting for us all. We have been reading ‘Super Duper You’ and telling everyone we are super-duper. We have been able to draw what we are super-duper at and write our names. We have also been talking about weather in science- we enjoyed matching weather types to their names and chatting about our favourite weather. In our class, we have lots of OT and movement breaks. We love to dance and move!

Missed Learning

14.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 237 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week.

In each episode we will see young creative minds come together to create bold and colourful outfits reusing, re-claiming and upcycling fabulous fashion by using only vintage, second-hand and sustainable materials.

Weekly Round Up

Our staff have loved meeting their new classes this week, and we have heard wonderful things about our departing Y6’s from their secondary schools too!

With one more week to go we are really excited to share sports day, reports, summer fair and our transition plans with you next week, and to enjoy our last few days before the summer break.

We also had the chance to celebrate our Diamond Standard winners from throughout the year this week, as the children and families attended a special awards ceremony at Teesside University, sharing the incredible achievements they have made with an audience from across the whole trust.

All year groups would love to share their experiences from transition day with our community, so please find below blog posts from all areas of school sharing the activities children completed – we hope you enjoy seeing what they have been up to!

Class Showcase

It’s transition week! Let’s see how everyone got on in their new classes.

Reception

During Nursery’s transition into Reception this week we talked about celebrating our differences.

We talked about our favorite colours and foods we liked, and we painted self-portraits to show how we are all different. Nursery stayed for dinner twice this week too – we are so impressed with their manners!

1T

What a wonderful transitional two days we had!

We began our transition by introducing the book ‘Commotion in the Ocean’, the children loved and engaged with the story and this became our stimulus for the two days.

The areas within the continuous provision were themed around this and these included, investigation stations, sorting activities and writing about the different sea creatures.

Throughout the two days, we worked collaboratively in the different areas and explored what meant to be collaborative. We then looked at a range of mediums that we could use in our artwork. Our task was to produce a sketch of a sea creature. We then created a collage of our artwork that will be displayed in our classroom. This will remind us how sharing, team work and working collaboratively can produce something to be proud of.

2C

We had a wonderful start to Year 2 this week! In English, we spent time reading the book ‘The Bog Baby,’ a story about two sisters who go fishing in a magic pond and find something much better than a frog or newt!

We thought of exciting adjectives to describe a Bog Baby and then wrote our own character descriptions. Miss Clark was really impressed with our ideas! We then created a habitat for Bog Baby, using collage, watercolours and pencils.

We made our own Bog Babies out of playdough and added them to the habitats we had made.

In Maths, we worked collaboratively to solve addition problems and had lots of fun in PE completing teambuilding activities. Well done everyone!

3L

During transition this week the new year 3’s have enjoyed learning about The Smartest Giant in Town.

In English they enjoyed writing a thank you letter to George for helping the different animals within the story as well as buying George an outfit to wear with £20 and working out how much change was left over. They also enjoyed creating a new pair of funky trainers for George to wear.

We were so impressed with their creativity.

4H

Over transition, the new Year 4’s have focussed on the value of inspiration we looked at the local international footballer, ’Beth Mead’.

The children were inspired to dream big and we created our own graffiti style slogan’s to inspire others. The children showed a fantastic attitude and curiosity to all the work they were asked to complete! We are looking forward to having a brilliant year, next year!

5H

We had a really fun few days as year 5.

We based a lot of our work on the book ‘Journey’ which is a wordless book full of fantastic illustrations. We created landscapes from the book using sketching, watercolours and oil pastels.

We made predictions and used inference skills in English lessons and finally in Maths we had to use all of our knowledge to crack a code!

6A

To mark the end of their primary school journey, the year six children had a fantastic day out to the cinema, followed by a play on the beach and a visit to the new park on Redcar seafront.

The children had a fabulous day, and it was made even better by the warm, sunny weather.

The children also received their leavers hoodies which they all wore.

They were certainly tired out after walking there and back as well as all the playing in-between.

B2S

The new B2S have enjoyed their transition week.

We have been reading different pirate stories and doing lots of work on pirates.

We created some lovely art work using our hands and made our own pirate underpants.

We made pirate hats, avoided the sharks and made wanted posters to help find those pesky pirates.

We have even written a message in a bottle. I wonder if we get a reply.

Missed Learning

69 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 218 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊

Can you get 100% next week?

Weekly Round up

This week our Year 6’s have had a really busy time!

Firstly, the girls were involved in their final Rubies session, before a group of students attended Outward Academy – ahead of the full Y6 transition which happens next week. We can’t believe they are nearly ready for secondary, but are sure they will have a great time when they move on with the next phase of their education.

On Thursday the full Y6 cohort had a day to remember, donning their leavers hoodies before a trip to the cinema and afternoon spent playing games and rock pooling on Redcar beach!

Elsewhere, B3G welcomed in parents for a fun session based on the learning they have completed this half term, and our Power of Women group headed out to learn more about their project, which will later be fed out to other children within the academy.

Next week sees transition for all year groups, and all the staff are very excited to meet their new classes and learn more about them!

Wishing all our families and community a lovely weekend!

Class Showcase

This week it’s the turn of Nursery and Reception to show us what they’ve been up to.

Nursery

This term in Nursery we have been learning all about Minibeasts. On Monday we were fortunate enough to have a visit from a local beekeeper. The children learnt all about bees and even got to sample some honey!

Reception

Last week we went to Redcar College and took part in a range of fun sporting activities. We did lots of exercise and worked collaboratively with our friends.

We have also been reading The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. We have role-played the story and made zip lines and pulleys to move the basket from the White Cottage to the Lighthouse so Mr Grinling could have his lovely lunch.

We also made a range of fabulous models from the story using recycled materials.
