Weekly Round up

We’ve had another great week, with lots of fun and activity across the academy!

Snow briefly settled earlier in the week which caused great excitement in every classroom!

We have seen some outstanding efforts at our clubs with choir working tremendously hard learning words for their Young Voiced and London experiences.

Our footballers have impressed Miss Hogarth and Mr Williams with their skills – both teachers are sure we have some young lions and lionesses in our midst!

Headstarters continue to set a fantastic example, and are beginning to plan how they can make a real difference in our school community.

We hope you all have a fantastic weekend and look forward to another action-packed week next week!

Class Round up

Let’s see what Year 5 and Year 6 have been up to.

Year 5

We have had a fantastic start to Spring term in Y5. In writing, we are writing a mystery narrative based on the book ‘The London Eye Mystery’. It is a very interesting book and we were all left wondering where Salim could have went.

In Maths, we have been looking at place value  including looking at numbers all the way up to 1,000,000.

Finally in Science, we have begun our topic about Space. This week, we acted out how the planets orbit the sun and you can see some of us doing this in our pictures.

Year 6

In year 6 we have been learning about electricity and circuits. We recapped what the components were that were needed for making a circuit.

To start with, we only had one wire, one bulb and one battery and we had to make the bulb light up. This was a challenge as many of us remembered from year 4 having more components.

Eventually we worked it out and got the bulb lit it!

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

This weeks winners are………

Missed Learning

34 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 219 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week, which is amazing!

A huge WELL DONE to you all.

Can you get 100% next week?

Missed Appointments

We strive to accommodate parents/carers with appointment times within the academy. Unfortunately we have noticed that many appointments have been missed, occasionally this may be due to unforeseen circumstances. If you have to cancel and/or re-arrange your appointment, please ensure you contact the academy as soon as possible. Failing to turn up for an appointment and not contacting the academy to cancel it has an adverse effect on other parents/carers appointment times. This can also take valuable staff time that could have been utilised by other parents.

Headlice

There would appear to be a problem with head lice in the academy.  Several parents have informed us that their child has headlice; obviously this must mean that there are other children who also have the problem.

I have taken this opportunity to provide some up-to-date advice for treating headlice and I would ask every parent to please check their child’s hair tonight and every night and treat if necessary.

It is not sufficient to simply shampoo your child’s hair; this will not get rid of the lice – parents should visit a chemist, supermarket or see their family doctor to purchase or obtain a prescription for headlice lotion and follow the instructions.  An alternative method, and one which does not involve the use of chemicals, is as follows:

  • Fill a sink with water
  • Wet the child’s hair
  • Apply conditioner
  • Comb (with a fine tooth comb or nit comb) the child’s hair into the sink.  If there are any lice they will fall out into the water.

It is recommended that the above treatment be done for at least 4 days.

If you know your child has headlice, please treat it as soon as possible and check your child’s hair every night.

The school nurse can be contacted via school, if any further advice or information is needed

Weekly Round up

Happy 2024!

We are delighted to be back, and hope all our families had a wonderful, relaxing break.

It has been lovely to welcome children back into the academy, and to hear what they have been getting up to over their holidays.

We are delighted with how well children have returned to learning, and have already seen some fantastic work in all our classrooms.

Staff are pleased to report that behaviour and attitudes have been exemplary, and children’s manners have been superb in the lunch hall and around the academy.

Football club returned this week, and with many more announcements in the upcoming weeks please continue to keep up to date through our social media and school comms so you are informed of the latest activities and opportunities available to your children.

We wish you a wonderful 2024 and look forward to inviting you into the academy soon!

Class Round up

Let’s see how Year 3, Year 4 and Class B4 have started the new term.

Year 3

In PE this term Year 3 are going to problem solving. They are going to have to work in teams to be able to complete the games.

Today they had to try and arrange themselves from tallest to smallest on a bench without falling off. They found it very tricky!

After a discussion of what an effective team has. Every team decided on a leader who helped them get in the correct order on the bench.

Year 4

In maths,  Year 4 have been working hard on place value. We have been able to find 1000 more or less than a given number.

We used the base 10 equipment to support us with our maths learning. It was great to see everybody working together and collaborating to find the answers to some tricky questions.

Year 4 have made a great start to the new Spring term and we are looking forward to learning some exciting things!

Class B4

It’s been a wonderful start to the term – after focusing on how to make a moving vehicle in DT and the stories about creation in RE – all before Christmas- we are now taking our learning journey towards Geography.

Our focus is Biomes. The children have shared a great knowledge of Biomes and ecosystems. They are now choosing the own Biomes to research.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round up

What a festive week we have had!

School has never been so busy, as parents and families dropped in for a range of Dormanstown Christmas traditions.

Our EYFS and KS1 nativities have been amazing! We have been so impressed by the quality of the acting, singing and performance in each play, and the way all children have worked as a team to put on such fantastic shows. We hope everyone who managed to see the performances enjoyed them and would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our wonderful staff for their dedication and hard work in planning and delivering them.

We also were dazzled by the sheer number of visitors for the reindeer run! Thank you so much to everyone who raised funds and encouraged their children in the event – Santa and the elf loved it!

KS2 also headed out to church for their Christingle celebration this week, which is always a highlight of the year. We love the peace and tranquility the church brings, and the sight of over 100 candles lit together is such a beautiful way to remind us of the true meaning of the season.

Don’t forget that Santa is visiting next week, and you can still purchase tickets for your child to visit his grotto – we wish you all a merry weekend!

Class Round up

Let’s see what the Early Years classes have been up to.

EYFS

EYFS have been busy preparing for our Christmas Nativity over the last couple of weeks, and this week was the time for our final performances! We are incredibly proud of our children.

They have shown confidence, charisma and dedication throughout the shows. We hope you enjoyed it!

Class B1

Last Tuesday, B1 had a visit from fire fighters from our local fire station.

We learned all about the fire engine and the important job the fire fighters do to help to keep us safe.

We also had lots of fun spraying the hose and sitting in the fire engine.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round up

We have had a week of preparation in school this week – as the children get ready for some big events in the next couple of weeks.

Across school, the corridors have been filled with the sound of music as children practice Christmas songs ready for nativities, church performances and Christingle. We love singing in our school, and we are very excited to share our new songs with the whole school community.

We have been delighted to announce our Diamond Standard winners in the last week. This is the culmination of a term of hard work, as five people are celebrated for their curiosity, courage, commitment, care and creativity. It is so hard to decide winners each term, as there are so many worthy candidates, but we were delighted with our representatives this term – who will now be invited to a grand trust celebration in the summer.

We are now on the lookout for our next group of winners, who will be awarded at the end of the Spring term.

Please make sure you check our calendar dates and Facebook regularly for all the Christmas events we have planned between now and the end of the year – and enjoy a relaxing, festive weekend!

Class Round up

This week Year 5, Year 6 and Class B4 are excited to show what they’ve been up to.

Year 5

We have had a really interesting week in year 5 where we have been lucky enough to work with the poet Bob Beagrie.

We have completed two poetry workshops which has seen us create our own group poems and even ended with our own poetry slam.

We will then be working with an animator to bring these poems to life. We can’t wait to share them with everybody!

Year 6

In Year Six, we have been learning about Charles Darwin and evolution in Science. We wanted to find out if different types of beaks effected how much food a bird could pick up.

To represent the beaks we had scissors, pegs and a fork. We used these to see which foods were the easiest to pick up such as pasta, sultanas, sunflower seeds and laces (to represent different insects and wild fruit).

The results were quite surprising and we understood how some animals survive in the wild and why others do not.

Class B4

A fab half term with endless creativity!

We have enjoyed being creative during Art where we produced our own land art with Year 5 and with an amazing team at the Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery.

We made a wonderful sand sculpture and even got creative at Foxrush – all with the influence of Andy Goldsworthy.

PE has helped us work on our dancing skills combining emotion with the focus of the 1850s circus and in English we have begun our focus on writing a recount in dairy form- thanks to a much enjoyed book the Danger Gang.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round up

We have had an incredibly exciting week in the academy this week! Christmas has arrived with trees, decorations and rehearsals across school. Not only that, but we even had a flurry of snow to welcome in the season!

Our Year 5 students had an amazing day on Tuesday, making their way down to Redcar Beach to complete some beautiful Andrew Goldsworthy inspired art installations, supported by the local art gallery. Not only that, BBC Radio Tees heard about the experience, and decided to drop down and interview the children while they were working! We are extremely proud of how well all children were able to articulate their creations, and talk with passion about what they had created.

We’ve also had a huge reading week in school! On Tuesday we were joined by children’s book author and illustrator Emma Reynolds, who travelled from Manchester to share assemblies, workshops and even a session with parents – based on her gorgeous book Amara And The Bats. Emma is working with school throughout the year as part of our application to gain Artsmark accreditation, and we look forward to welcoming her back again soon.

Reception also had an author experience this week: Nishani Reed visited them for a draw along session, based on her new book Nabil Steals A Penguin. We loved the laughter and fun as the children listened to the story and drew their own penguin sketches!

Keep an eye on the diary dates over the upcoming week for more Christmas events as we make our way into December!

Class Round up

Here is the latest from Year 4 and Class B3

Year 4

In Art, Year 4 have been learning about the artist Antony Gormley.

So far, we have explored his work and recognised he uses human form and his sculptures are placed in a range of different outdoor settings.

We are now creating our own wire sculptures that represent his work, considering carefully the proportion of the figures body parts.

Class B3

Class B3 welcomed our parents into school last week.

They helped us learn to sew using a running stitch.

We all worked well together and had a great afternoon.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round up

What a busy week we’ve had!

As you are aware we had some very special visitors in academy this week and we would like to pass on a huge thank you to our whole school community for your support, honesty and involvement in our Ofsted visit. Outcomes will be shared as soon as the report is published, and whilst we are unable to share results until this happens, we are incredibly grateful to all our families who were involved, either through face-to-face discussions, online surveys or supporting your child in their learning.

On that note the children were amazing! We are so proud of all our students who represented the school so well. They were observed, interviewed, their behaviour discussed and their books studied by our inspection team, who noted how wonderful they all were! It was a ringing endorsement of the hard work our whole school community continue to do that the team were able to give such positive feedback on our students.

Next week we have a full and action-packed week planned again, so please do check in on our social media page to see what we have been up to – and a final thank you again for your ongoing support from all the staff.

Class Round up

It’s time to see what Year 1, Year 2 and Class B2 have been up to.

Year 1

The year 1 children have worked really hard so far this half term.

In the last few weeks we have been learning about the artist Iris Scott.

We practiced mark making using a range of objects and mixing colours to turn them lighter and darker. We also took pictures of things that inspired is in our playground and made a sketch from these pictures. For our final piece we have been inspired by Iris Scott’s poppy/flower collection.

As a whole class we agreed that it would be nice as we have just had Remembrance Day at school. The children looked at pictures of poppies, then carefully sketched an outline of their main focus.

As we were inspired by Iris Scott we decided we should use our fingers o paint just like she does.  So far, we have added red, green and black to our painting.

Next week we will be completing the background. The children are really excited to have a finished piece.

Year 2

Year 2 have been learning all about the famous artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

We have been exploring a range of media, including oil pastels, crayons and felt pens to draw circles, spirals and patterns, all in the style of this artist!

Hundertwasser was also an architect, designing many interesting and colourful buildings.

We worked together to create a ‘Hundertwasser Dormanstown,’ decorating the houses of Dormanstown with colourful patterns.

Class B2

Wow! What an exciting time that we had over the last few weeks.

First off, we have been reading the story, ‘We’re Going on A Bear Hunt.’ Then, found some bear prints and we went on a bear hunt.

We walked around the school and outside. We had to squelch in some mud and we finally found a scary bear.

In Art, we have been looking at Iris Scott. She is an artist who uses her fingers to create some magnificent art work.

We created some poppy landscape pictures in the style of Iris Scott.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Which class will be the first to receive that treat?

Missed Learning

41.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.

100% Attendance

This week we had 199 children who achieved 100% Attendance for this week. A huge WELL DONE to you all 😊

Weekly Round up

This week all children have been thinking about antibullying. We recognise the importance of all children feeling safe and happy in school, and all classrooms have had discussions and circle times where they have discussed how they should behave, and how we can overcome negative choices. This started on Monday with our odd-sock day. It was lovely to see the children confidently talk about why they had dressed differently for the day, and how well they could explain the importance of being a good friend.

We have also had parent’s evening this week, which was amazing! We are incredibly grateful to all the parents and families who attended, and we hope that you are proud of your children and the hard work they have been putting in to their work. We are also thankful for those of you who filled in the parental survey. If you did not get a chance a QR code link is attached below – the form is a great chance to share your suggestions, and to help us future plan for how we can make our school even better!

Our Y5’s have also been out on their bikes this week, completing the first of their cycling proficiency sessions. Feedback from their instructors has been great, and they are now moving on to their Level 2 awards next week.

Finally, we rounded off the week with Children In Need. The school was awash with colour as children completed a range of activities including a BEARPEE challenge, where they jumped their way through as many burpees as possible as they could in a set time! Your kind donations are yet to be totaled, but we are sure your contributions will make a huge difference to the charity.

Class Round up

Let’s see how early years are getting on with Nursery, Reception and B1 this week.

Nursery

This week Nursery have been enjoying the Gruffalo story and enjoying exploring woodland environments.

We have also had a fantastic day enjoying Children in Need activities and dressing up.

Reception

Reception have been learning all about the changes that happen in autumn.

We have enjoyed role playing the story Percy the Park Keeper, After The Storm.

We even built Percy a new tree for his animals to live in!

Class B1

This half term, B1 have been super busy learning about the celebrations Bonfire Night and Diwali. The children have used their fine motor skills to make fireworks in lots of different ways!

We have also been learning about how Fire Fighters help to keep us safe. The children have enjoyed dressing up as fire fighters and role playing to put out fires.

Last week, we welcomed our parents in to share the learning we had been doing and take part in some firework and fire fighter related activities.

Attendance

Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.

Weekly Round up

We are back!

We hope all our families had a lovely week off school, and that you managed to rest and enjoy some time together.

As the nights grow dark, and the weather gets colder and wetter it has been amazing to see so many smiling faces at the door – and we have been delighted at how well learning has returned to our school.

Year Six students have started their reading and maths boosters, and have already shown the perfect attitudes towards revision; our new Christmas club has been hugely well received and enjoyed by all and classes are now beginning their new curriculum topic in art – so we are eagerly awaiting the inventive, individual and creative projects children will be working on in the next few weeks!

Next week we are hosting parents evening, and we are very excited to share your child’s work with you, as well as have the time to discuss how they are getting on. If you cannot attend, or are yet to make an appointment please let the office know and they can make arrangements for you.

Class Round up

For the first week back we’re focusing on Year 5, Year 6 and class B4.

Year 5

We have had a really exciting week in Y5 this week. We have begun our new Art topic in our curriculum lessons.

This term we are looking at the work of the sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. He is famous for working with natural materials to create sculptures within a landscape.

We went outside to try it out for ourselves and we came up with some really interesting ideas!

Year 6

Before the half term, Year Six visited Eden Camp.

We have been learning about World War II in our history lessons and once there we could go in the different themed huts.

We saw and learnt more about how the war started, the Blitz, rationing, streets at war and the U-boats. We had such an amazing day!

B4

B4 have had a fantastic term.

MIMA has been a great experience where we explored various forms of art through the focus of Redcar beach.

This will be revisited as we enjoy art by Andy Goldsworthy where we will create natural sculptures in our environment.

We had a practiced of working with some of the materials which has been both fun and challenging. We loved the focus of looking at Scandinavia in Geography.

Weekly Round up

Well, that’s it!

A long, but hugely rewarding 8 weeks are over – and we would firstly like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all our families and community for such an outstanding year we have had so far!

It feels like an awfully long time ago that we returned from the summer, but the progress all classes have made has been astounding, and you can all be incredibly proud of the work children have put in already to making this year a success.

This week has been no different!

We have had trips galore, with Y4 visiting MIMA for some amazing art exhibitions, Y6 reflecting on the profound effect of World War II by visiting Eden Camp, and the half term was capped of in style by our choir, who joined the rest of our trust for a beautiful concert at Guisborough Church.

We were also joined this week by our Year 1 and 2 parents for a Read Write Inc coffee morning, which was a lovely opportunity to catch up on reading, talk about the groups children are currently in – and to share what is working well both in school and at home. After the holidays we look forward to inviting in families to see our sessions in action – and to join in with some reading classes!

Finally, we had the excitement and fun of the halloween disco, which was a huge success and loved by all!

We wish everyone a wonderful week off, and look forward to seeing you all in November!
