It’s been a chilly week this week, but that hasn’t stopped the fires of learning at Dormanstown!
Our Year 1 class had a fantastic day out at Hartlepool Marina – experiencing what life would have been like onboard HMS Trincomalee! The children returned to school eager to share what they had learnt and full of facts about sailing!
Our Power of Women students were also out this week, heading to GB Bank for the day. They did a tremendous job representing the school, and even came back with some free signed books from one of their activities!
Football club braved the chilly weather this week to put in some valuable practice. It is great to see how skilful the children are, and also how well they play as a team. We are hopeful that some of our children will be representing the school in competitions in the upcoming weeks.
Starbooks launched on Tuesday this week, with parents and carers coming into our library to share stories together with their children. Don’t forget this is now a weekly event, and there are prizes to be won for filling your child’s bookmark!
Keep an eye out for more dates and exciting events coming soon!
This week, our featured classes are 5H and 6A, so please enjoy reading what they have been learning about.
This week year five have been reading Firebird by Saviour Pirotta. They have been fully engaged in this book and some great discussion has been taking place. We did get into a rather heated debate (as you can see from the photos) when Prince Ivan is given three paths to choose from.
The options he must choose from are:
Take the middle road and you will suffer hunger and cold.
Take the right road and you will live, though your horse will die.
Take the left road and you will die, though your horse will live.
What would you choose?
To kickstart our new history topic, we had the pleasure of a Maya archeologist, Vanessa, come into school and tell us all about her work. We learnt about how the Maya people dress, how they made food, what their houses were like and how they traded. We also looked at and compared coprolite (poo!) to see what they ate and why.
Finally, 3 of our children attended their first POW session yesterday and had a fantastic time meeting inspirational women from different areas of industry.
Some of the academy council representatives were invited to attend a Local Academy Committee meeting where they shared their ideas to improve different aspects of the academy. They articulated their priorities very well and answered questions in depth. Following this, they received a card and a gift voucher to support priority one of their action plan; which is to rejuvenate the flower/vegetable plots on school site. Watch this space, as they may ask for your support too!
Each week we have an ‘Awesome Attendance’ competition for the class or classes with the highest attendance. The class with the highest attendance will receive a letter and the first class to spell out ‘Awesome’ receives a treat for the whole class.
Which class will be the first to receive that treat?
This weeks winners are……..
24.5 days of missed learning occurred this week due to unauthorised absences. Unauthorised absences are for holidays, parents/carers not contacting the academy or any other unexplained absence. With most minor ailments, children can be in school, so we really encourage you to think about keeping your child at home.
On Monday there is a special ‘Chinese New Year’ themed lunch menu, this is open to all children, even those who normally have packed lunches. Otherwise next week will be week 1
